‘I’m coming to Tasmania for a week - can you tell me where I should go?’
From time to time I get asked - but this week lots asked. Drafting this for those or others who will ask in the future. No doubt this will probably be the start of a really long list- I can feel it.
Tasmania winter is off….and on…and off…and on. Some of places will be open and others shut- its rather random, so note that everything can change wildly at last minute - even the weather. But I love winter. So rug up and always check details before you go. Big tip however - Never leave home without ‘4 seasons in one car’.
MONA Go early. You can drive up to the Museam or take the Mona Ferry return from Brook St Pier. If you take the ferry - I highly recomend killing the time before or after in Brook St Pier at Rosie in my Midnight Dreams - excellent for coffee/wine or both (or just killing an entire afternoon with good mates). The Mona Ferry goes direct to the Museam and has 2 return type classes - ‘Standard $28 or The Posh Pit $60 with all the bells /whistles. For me, life is short (especially if you don’t have kids in tow) - So the Posh Pit is an excellent way to see the city, the museam from the water and to get a couple of drinks + nibbles on quick the 20 minute trip. Tip: Get a drink as soon as you board so you can get the second one in before you get off as its a 20 min quick ride. Bonus win - if your visiting Mona on a Sunday - you’ll find that there are no parking fees on the streets throughout Hobart city. Once you’ve toured around Mona - allow for a couple of hours at least, I like to find a patch of lawn + a beanbag, listen to Jazz, order food and let the kids kill each other on the grass/playground. There are plenty of options for food to choose from (here)but I usually like to get the ‘Popcorn Cauliflour’ + some ‘Hot Chips Baby’ from Dubsy’s outside near the grass in the sunshine. Mona is open from Friday - Monday and you have to book online - Tasmanian nowerdays have to book too, (years ago it was free on arrival) but now it costs $10 to secure your spot, then you get that option to have it refunded (if you want). However all Mainlanders pay. $38 Adults, $32 Consession and kids $15. All very well worth it. @monamuseum
